Handcrafted & hand engraved pendant by Joe Descoteaux.
Joe Descoteaux was born in 1964 in Kitchner, Ontario. He is a member of the Ojibwa from the Blind River First Nation.
When he moved to the West Coast in the early 1980’s he met his longtime partner, Cheryl Wadhams, whom introduced him to the art of the Northwest Coast. In 1993 he began his apprenticeship of West Coast Art under Cheryl Wadham, Don Dawson, Charles Harper and Raymond Wadham. Here he learned the basics of the West Coast forms and designs. He later was offered a jewelry apprenticeship under Llyod Wadham Jr. and now exclusively carves in silver and gold. Throughout his work, one can identify various stylistic similarities found in Kwakwaka’wakw art. This he acquired and was granted permission to carved in Cheryl’s family style, Kwaguilth, as her family is from the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation.
Joe has a distinct style of his own while adhering to Kwaguilth form of design. He holds the name “Hethlamas”, a traditional name given to him from the Dawson family at a Potlatch. He continues to expand his artistic talents as he proudly represents not only his own stylistic technique but as well as Cheryl’s family and the Kwakwaka’wakw Nation.
