Born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1974 to a Gitxsan mother and a Nisga’a father, Karen Francis was a child of the Sixties Scoop, adopted into a non-native home and later moved into foster care at the age of 12. At 18, she found her biological family and began a journey of reclamation, greatly helped by the teachings of her late grandmother, Rena Benson Simoo’git (hereditary chief), and grandfather, Frank Benson. According to her family’s matrilineal culture, Karen is Laxgibuu (Wolf crest) from the Wilp (House) of Nii Kyep. Karen attended Emily Carr University of Art and Design, majoring in oil painting and obtaining a Fine Arts Degree in 1996. Karen has connected with a rich network of Indigenous artists over the years and learned traditional formline and carving. Karen has since been involved in various public community projects, such as the Reconciled Futures Art Camp for Indigenous youth, and has participated in various art shows throughout Vancouver.
