“My name is Shelly, also known as Yasakw in Kwakwaka’wakw and Guudangaay Tlaatsgaa Jaad in Haida, meaning “Strong Minded Woman.” I come from the Haida matrilineal society, belonging to the Raven, Three Fin Killer Whale, and Dogfish clans. From my Kwakwaka’wakw father’s side, I belong to the Thunderbird, and Grizzly Bear clans. I practice formline art daily and explore new art forms. I live on Haida Gwaii with my family.” “Raven is with two Raven babies under her wings in the shape of a heart. Children are a gift as they carry our stories, our culture and our future. This is our reminder that they deserve to be loved, honoured and cared for. Every Child Matters. My Naanii (grandmother) Audrey was a Residential School survivor who put in the work every single day until the day she passed. Because of her and the women in my family, I am able to break generational traumas.”

100% cotton

100% of the net proceeds of Wickaninnish Gallery’s sales of Every Child Matters Orange Shirts, featuring a design by Simone Diamond, will be donated to the Tseshaht First Nation [c̓išaaʔatḥ] in Port Alberni, which has begun surveying the old site of the Alberni Indian Residential School (AIRS).

ʔuuʔatumin yaqckʷiimitqin is the Nuu-chah-nulth word meaning “Doing it for our Ancestors.” Led by Tseshaht First Nation, this project works to heal and bring answers to those affected by the Alberni Indian Residential School.
