Handcarved spruce plaque by Kwakwaka'wakw artist George Matilpi with leather hanger for easy installment.
George Matilpi was born in Alert Bay, BC and is a member of the Kwakwaka'wakw and Dakelh Nations. He was born in 1953 and has been carving for over 50 years. Taught by Amos Dawson, Chief of the Carrier (Dakelh) Nation, George Matilpi carves exceptional and traditional Kawkiult wood plaques. He employs the traditional black, red, and turquoise colour scheme on unstained cedar wood. Within this framework, Matilpi creates innovative and charismatic animal plaques with personality.
In addition to practicing his art, Matilpi is helping to ensure its continuation by teaching young carvers in Vancouver, BC and Seattle.
The BEAR signifies protection, strength, nurturing, power, and healing.
