Ivan Thomas, born in 1973 in the Tseshaht Nation territory in Port Alberni, British Columbia, is a revered Nuu-chah-nulth jewellery artist known for his intricate carving work on gold and silver. Having grown up around several notable Northwest Coast artists, and his mother being an art gallery owner, he was inspired to become an artist himself. He studied under Master Carver Derek Wilson and has been greatly influenced by several others, including Patrick Amos, Ron Hamilton, Art Thompson, and Bill Reid. He moved to Vancouver in 1992 and became a part of the growing community of artists on Granville Island. In his art, Ivan continues to push the limits of formline design and is constantly creating new methods of expressing both the traditional and contemporary elements of his artistic heritage.
