Coast Salish Weaving

Originally woven seamlessly on a cardboard loom, this design features flowing diamonds and triangles, symbolizing innovation rooted in tradition. The unbroken pattern reflects the continuity of cultural practice, and the intelligence required to adapt ancient techniques to contemporary forms. With quiet strength, this design reveals how weaving is a form of problem-solving; and an embodied science that carries stories, teachings, and identity through every strand. This reflects Spelexílh's first woven bag, and it continues to inspire both new learners and lifelong artists.

The Coast Salish are Indigenous peoples of the Pacific Northwest, known for deep cultural teachings, cedar weaving, and carving. The Skwxwú7mesh Úxmumixw (Squamish Nation) have lived for generations and continue to steward their lands along the Squamish River, Howe Sound, and what is now North Vancouver. Their culture is deeply rooted in land, water, and community. In Squamish tradition, weaving is a sacred practice; each pattern carries story, connection, and ancestral knowledge passed down through ceremony and language.
