He works in red and yellow cedar, as well as pine. Nelson carves mostly wall plaques, but also small masks, paddles, and panels.
Hand-carved pine plaque, created by Nlaka'pamux artist Nelson McCarty of Lytton, BC. Each animal carries cultural significance: the Thunderbird represents protection, power, and prestige, the Raven symbolizes creativity, wisdom, knowledge, honour, and cleverness, and the Orca embodies family, loyalty, longevity, and the spirit of the traveller. This large, detailed piece highlights Nelson’s skill in bringing West Coast Indigenous stories and symbolism to life through traditional carving. Includes a leather hanger for easy display.
