Shelley Davies

Cultural Background: Coast Salish, T’Sou-ke Nation

Born in Victoria British Columbia Shelley grew up in the small village of Shirley on the rugged southwest coast of Vancouver Island. Raised by her single hardworking mom and beloved grandmother, Shelley was always exposed to nature and wildlife from the beaches where she lived, to the backwoods camping and fishing trips with her mom and grandma.

Shelley is Coast Salish, currently living on T’Sou-ke Nation reserve where she is starting to explore her cultural art forms. Learning more about her art culture of the T’Sou-ke Nation is inspiring on another level for Shelley.
Shelley has pursued several different art mediums over the years but really came to love painting, specifically in acrylic, using vibrant color palettes in her work. Shelley is a self-taught artist who is constantly challenging her boundaries and comfort zone. Wildlife is Shelley’s first love for subject matter, but she has challenged those confines in murals and portraits she was commissioned to do in Saanich Peninsula Hospital extended care facility.

Origine Culturelle: Salish de la côte, Nation des T'Sou-ke

Née à Victoria, en Colombie-Britannique, Shelley a grandi dans le petit village de Shirley, sur la côte sud-ouest escarpée de l’île de Vancouver. Élevée par sa mère célibataire laborieuse et par sa grand-mère bien-aimée, Shelley a toujours été au contact de la nature et de la vie sauvage, que ce soit sur les plages où elle vivait ou lors des excursions de pêche et de camping en forêt avec sa mère et sa grand-mère.
Salish de la côte vivant désormais dans la réserve de la nation des T’Sou-ke, Shelley a commencé à explorer cette culture. Les formes d’expression artistique de la nation des T’Sou-ke ont stimulé son inspiration.

Shelley a pratiqué plusieurs techniques artistiques au fil des ans, mais elle voue un amour particulier à la peinture, en particulier l’acrylique, et emploie des palettes de couleurs vives dans ses œuvres. Artiste autodidacte, elle repousse constamment ses limites et sa zone de confort. La faune et la flore sont ses sujets de prédilection, mais elle a aussi abordé d’autres thèmes dans des murales et réalisé des portraits commandés par l’établissement de soins prolongés de l’hôpital Saanich Peninsula.
