Made in Vancouver
Cast sterling silver earrings by Kwakwaka’wakw and Cree artist Carrie Matilpi of Alert Bay, BC.
Carrie Matilpi is a jewellery artist of Kwakwaka’wakw and Cree heritage who specialises in intricate and deeply carved pieces. Born in Alert Bay, British Columbia, she began a silver work apprenticeship at nineteen under her father, Charles Harper, where she learned the art of carving. Since beginning her carving journey in 1996, she has established herself as an expert carver working in both gold and silver. She often works alongside her sister, Victoria Harper, and is part of a steadily growing group of female jewellery carvers within Vancouver. She holds the Kolus, or the baby thunderbird, as her crest.
Lost wax casting is a method that involves building a mold around a handcrafted wax model, melting away the wax, and filling the mold with molten metal. Each piece is individually polished and completed by hand.
