This piece of Indigenous jewellery has been laser-engraved. The craft of laser-engraved silver jewellery involves a sophisticated process which allows highly skilled artisans to bring their designs to life with utmost precision, durability, and intricacy. It is both meticulous and hands-on at every step: from the initial sketch, laser programming and engraving, to the cleaning and polishing of each completed, individual piece.
Chris Sparrow is a Coast Salish artist from xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam). He is a master carver but also extremely skilled and experienced with various other mediums including but not limited to jewelry, stone sculptures, and painting. His journey as an artist began many years ago when Chris was 9 years old, mentored by his late father and master carver - Irving Sparrow. Chris puts all his father's teachings and knowledge into everything he does as he carries on his father's legacy.
Chris has had several projects through the Vancouver School Board. This includes an 18-foot house post, located at the Vancouver School Board head office. He has also been commissioned to do a variety of projects for several schools in the Lower Mainland, including Magee Secondary, David Thompson Secondary, Walter Moberly Elementary and Prince of Whales Secondary. Chris is very passionate about working with youth because he knows how much of a positive impact art has had in his life and feels strongly about sharing his knowledge of art and the cultural teachings behind it.
