Cultural Background: Kwakwaka’wakw & Coast Salish, Prince George, BC

Shirley Babcock’s ’s maternal ancestry comes from Dzawada’enuxw First Nation (Kwakwaka’wakw) and Shuneymuxw First Nation (Coast Salish) and her paternal ancestry comes from Acadia (French part of Eastern Canada). Shirley Babcock began painting as hobby in 2005 and became more interested in art after researching the history and culture of her ancestors. She opened her art business in February 2012. Shirley creates art in various styles, but uses the basic forms passed down from her ancestors, the mid coast art style. Her primary medium includes acrylic on canvas and drums.

La lignée maternelle de Shirley Babcock vient de la Première Nation Dzawada'enuxw (Kwakwaka'wakw) et de la Première Nation Shuneymuxw (Salish de la Côte Ouest), tandis que son ascendance paternelle vient d'Acadie (communauté francophone de l'Est du Canada). Dès 2005, Shirley Babcock peint comme passe-temps, puis s'intéresse à l'art en effectuant des recherches sur l'histoire et la culture de ses ancêtres. Elle ouvre son entreprise artistique en février 2012. Shirley crée des œuvres d'art de différents styles, à partir des formes transmises par ses ancêtres de la Côte Ouest. Son médium de prédilection est l'acrylique et elle peint sur toile et sur peaux de tambours.
